The 1969 AMC AMX was a sporty car with a base 290 cubic inch V8 engine, and optional 360 and 390 cubic inch engines. It had 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission The 1969 model saw slightly different interiors, instrumentation, and carpeting. Mid-year, a "Big Bad" paint option was introduced in orange, blue, and green, with color-matched bumpers. Here's a closer look at the 1969 AMX:
• Engine: The base engine was a 290 cubic inch V-8, but a midlevel 343 cubic inch engine was also available, producing 280 horsepower.
• Transmission: Options included a 4-speed manual or 3-sppeed automatic.
• Special editions: The California 500 Special was a replica of the pace car for the 1969 Riverside 500, and was finished in Big Bad Green with black racing stripes.
Only 32 are believed to have been built.
• Pace car: The AMX served as the pace car for the 1969 Riverside 500.
• Speed records: Before going on sale, two AMX's set 106 world speed and endurance records at a Goodyear track in Texas.
