After proving its worth in the muscle car market from 1967 through the early ’80s, the Camaro transitioned into its third generation in 1982. This was the first year that Chevrolet fitted its Camaro model with factory fuel injection, a four-cylinder engine and a hatch-back rear end configuration.
At the base level, the Sport Coupe gave Camaro buyers a base 151ci LQ9 four-cylinder engine with 173ci V6 and 305ci V8 options. Dog-dish wheel covers came standard on the Sport Coupe, while the car could also be had with full wheel covers or 14-inch body-colored 5-spoke Rally wheels.
Sitting mid-level in the Camaro lineup was the Berlinetta, fitted with the 173ci LB9 V6 engine, finned 14×7-inch aluminum wheels with gold inlayed “Berlinetta” center caps, gold “Berlinetta” badging, body pinstripes, gold and black taillight divides, full instrumentation, custom cloth interior and superior insulation in standard form. While the 2.8L LC1 V6 engine was standard, the Berlinetta could also be optioned with the 305ci LG4 V8.
Securing the top position in the 1982 Camaro lineup, the coveted Z28 came standard with V8 power thanks to the standard 305ci carbureted powerplant, but could also be had with the optional 305ci LU5 twin TBI Cross Fire Injection V8. Upgrading to the fuel injection gave drivers an additional 20hp.
All Cross Fire Injection V8-equipped Z28 models came with a fiberglass SMC hood with functional air induction scoops. All Z28 models were equipped with a 3-piece rear spoiler, lower body valences in gold or silver, a special nose piece, and 15×7-inch cast-aluminum 5-spoke wheels, which were accented in either gold or silver to match the car’s valences.
As a special year for the Camaro, Chevrolet was invited to pace the Indianapolis 500 with their new 1982 Camaro, and in turn, created nearly 6,000 Z28 Indianapolis Pace Car replicas. These cars came with the same engine options as the regular Z28 models but stood out with a special two-toned silver and blue paint scheme with special striping, 15-inch orange pinstriped wheels, and a blue and silver interior.
